Happy New Year & January Meeting Schedule

January 2, 2017 Rotary Member

Rotary Club of Pisgah Forest wishes all a very Happy New Year!

For the month of January 2017 our speaker chair is Ann Farash and the Rotary International theme for the month is Vocational Service.

For the Jan 4th meeting our speaker will be Mrs. Jennifer Williams, a teacher at Brevard High School.  Jennifer will talk about the exciting and powerful TIME program.  The TIME program has HS students preforming original research and discovering science instead of rote learning.  Her students have gone on to compete at the National and International Science Fairs and have won numerous prestigious scholarships to colleges. This January will be the first time that Brevard HS will be the institution sited in a Research Journal.

For the Jan11th meeting our speaker will be Dr. Ora Wells – a Brevard Pediatrician for more than 35 years.  Dr. Wells will talk on the scourge of western North Carolina: La Crosse Encephalitis.  Mosquito borne illnesses like ZIKA have captured the attention of the world and generated more than a billion congressional dollars.  La Crosse has been a steady presence in Transylvania County and the numbers have been small but steady during his years of his practice in Brevard.  With no vaccines or treatment; education is key.

For the Jan 18th meeting our speakers will be Dr. Ann Farash and Florence Allbaugh from Florence Nightingale Global Health.  They will discuss their work with two Rotary groups in Mexico and the Philippines, including the most recent mission to North Samar, Philippines in Oct-Nov 2016.  The Pisgah Forest Rotary Club made a donation to this program which was spent feeding protein rich meals at a local school of 430 students over two days as well as feeding the local population who endured long waits for medical care. This donation also provided a gift to the Catarman Rotarians to continue with their mission to feed local children.

The January 25th meeting will be a Club Assembly.

The public is always welcome to attend our breakfast meetings, listen to our guest speakers, and share a friendly, enjoyable, and delicious buffet breakfast at the Pisgah Fish Camp every Wednesday morning at 8:00 am.
